Admissions Representative (Civil Service)

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is seeking a full-time Admissions Representative. As a professional member of the University of Minnesota Rochester Office of Admissions and Student Service, the Admissions Representative will assist with the recruitment of new, transfer, and graduate students for the University. We are seeking a highly motivated entry-level admissions representative with a positive and optimistic attitude, who will play a key role in shaping UMR’s image and provide excellent service to prospective students and their families.   

Position Responsibilities

  • Support the Enrollment Management Coordinator and the Director of Admissions to further recruiting and enrollment management initiatives. 
    • Responsible for greeting prospective students and families and other visitors to the University of Minnesota Rochester Student Services Office/Admissions Office. 
    • Assist with maintaining accurate data in Recruitment Plus (student database). Duties will include data entry (college fair participation, campus visit, ACT received, phone call made, etc) and report generation. 
    • Provide preliminary evaluation of academic and other credentials for admission advising and decision-making purposes.
  • Participate and assist in the coordination of general and multicultural student recruitment outreach activities on and off campus; including but not limited to:
    • School Visits: The representative will travel to high schools to meet with school counselors and interested students. The Representative will assist in the development of a travel schedule and will be responsible for making detailed arrangements. School visits include, but are not limited to, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin high school visits; classroom presentations; and occasional evening and weekend presentations to students and families. 
    • College Fairs: The representative is required to take an active role in coordination and participation at college fairs; including but not limited to, Minnesota Education Fairs (statewide college fair circuit); Wisconsin Education Fairs (statewide college fair circuit); National College Fairs; and Graduate/Professional School Fairs.
    • Campus Visits: The representative will share in the planning and implementation of special campus visits as wells as individual campus visits. Duties include student interviews, group presentations, program development, advertisement, resource coordination, and securing the assistance of faculty, current students, program directors, and community members.
    • Phone and E-mail Work/Correspondence: The representative is expected to recruit students through personal contact over the phone, through e-mail, print publications, personalized letters, and other appropriate forms of communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of related experience.  Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience totaling five years may be substituted.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. The Admissions Representative must be able to travel moderately. Occasional overnight visits may be required (travel reimbursement is provided). 
  • Excellent customer service, public relations, and communication skills in both interpersonal and group setting are also required. 
  • The successful candidate must be highly motivated, self-driven, and results orientated and must be able to contribute to UMR’s efforts to recruit top quality students in the state and nationwide.  
  • The selected individual will be comfortable with meeting deadlines and attaining enrollment goals while maintaining multiple projects. 
  • Applicants must be willing to work beyond an 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. work schedule to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of experience in admissions, student recruitment, the transfer process, or college marketing and communications is desired. 
  • Experience in website design and/or print publication development is preferred.  
  • Fluency in a second language (Spanish or Somali) is desired. 
  • Recruitment Plus, Datatel, or a similar admission database experience is also preferred.

Development Grant Writer

As part of a broader institutional advancement effort, the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is searching for a contract Development Grant Writer to assist UMR in achieving significant growth in corporate, government, and foundation grants and stewardship. The Development Grant Writer will report directly to the Development Officer for Corporate and Foundation Relations and will have a one-year non-employee contract with UMR. 

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Writing and Communications

  • Writing grants for University of Minnesota programs
  • Compiling data and supplementary materials (such as financial reports, statistics on regional programmatic initiatives, etc.) for communications with grant sponsors
  • Producing high-quality written communication for sponsors at all stages of the development process, including proposals for government, foundation and corporate prospects; mid-year and final reports


Portfolio Strategy and Planning

  • Conducting research as part of the development strategy for reaching external funding goals
  • Identifying new corporate and foundation prospects to pursue through research and prospecting
  • Identifying opportunities for increased giving from existing donors

Operations

  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records and data on government, foundation, and corporate grant opportunities
  • Managing the deadline-driven calendar of all development activities related to government, corporations, and foundations, including: researching and following grant guidelines, submitting all grant materials on time, and following up as necessary
  • Other responsibilities as determined by organizational need

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 2 years of grant writing experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Experience

  • Proven track record of securing funding from government, foundation, and/or corporate resources
  • Employment within grants management, foundation, corporate relations, and/or fundraising environments

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to speak and write compellingly about UMR organization, mission, and funding goals to individuals and groups within the corporate sector
  • Knowledge of grant repositories and databases available as potential funding sources
  • Good strategic/critical thinking and goal orientation
  • Ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and deadline-driven environment
  • Strong relationship builder with keen understanding of what motivates others
  • Ability to create opportunities and excel in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Exceptional detail orientation and organization
