Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)

This program is designed for college graduates who are seeking general management education at the graduate level on a part-time basis while continuing to pursue their professional managerial careers full time. Executive style delivery of the program allows for effective and efficient coverage of course content in a minimum period of time. Students completing all available coursework offered each term can typically complete the program in under three years.

If you completed a baccalaureate degree in engineering, science, education, or fine or liberal arts, adding an M.B.A. degree may be useful for opening doors and enhancing prospects for a career in management. If your degree was in accounting, business, or economics, or you have completed coursework in these areas for any reason in the past, you can update, sharpen, and generally improve and broaden your skills in these areas through the M.B.A. program.

Admission Information

M.B.A. applicants must be admitted to the University of Minnesota Graduate School prior to enrolling in M.B.A. courses. To be admitted, applicants must present evidence of having:

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university, and
  • Achieved satisfactory performance on one of the following general predictors of readiness for graduate work:
    • Completion of a graduate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university
    • The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) – within the past 5 years
    • Passing of the Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) exam

Generally, the criteria for admission to the M.B.A. program are:

  • An overall or final two-year undergraduate GPA or graduate degree GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4-point scale)
  • An overall and analytical writing analysis GMAT score at the 50th percentile or above (approximately 530-540) and a score at the 25th percentile or above on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GMAT within the past 5 years
  • For international students, a TOEFL score of at least 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL with section scores of 21 on writing and 19 on reading (213 on the computer-based TOEFL, 550 on the paper based TOEFL).

Performances on the above criteria, as well as the number of years of full-time work experience, professional goals, and completion of formal education in foundation areas, are considered and balanced as part of the admission decision. Strong credentials in other areas may balance failure to meet preferred levels in one specific area.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

Applicants who have not already earned a graduate degree, passed the CPA exam, or completed the GRE exam for another program, should complete the GMAT rather than the GRE prior to applying for admission to the M.B.A. program. Generally, GMAT scores are considered to be valid for a period of five years after completion of the test. The GMAT measures general verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing skills that are developed over a long period of time. It is designed to help graduate schools of business assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Starting in fall 1997, the GMAT was converted to a computer-adaptive test, which means those completing it must do so using a computer at designated test centers. Additional information about the GMAT is available at any of the following web sites:

GMAT preparation courses are periodically available from the University of Minnesota. For more information about the course and registration, see www.cce.umn.edu/testprep/gmat.

Information and directions for registering to take the GMAT are provided at the first web site (GMAC/GMAT) listed above. The GMAT test is available in Rochester at the Pearson Official Testing Center located at 1544 Greenview Drive S.W., Rochester, MN.   Registration must be completed online at   http://www.gmac.com/gmac/thegmat or by phone at 1-800-717-GMAT. To ensure scores arrive by application deadlines, the GMAT should be scheduled and completed at least two weeks prior to the deadline dates.

Program Facts

History
Spring Semester 2002, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) School of Business and Economics began offering a fully accredited M.B.A. at the University of Minnesota Rochester.

The UMD M.B.A. program was started in 1976 to provide an opportunity for currently employed individuals in the Duluth-Superior area, northeastern Minnesota, and northwestern Wisconsin to complete a graduate degree in management. The program was designed and is offered to serve the needs of practitioners; thus, the curriculum emphasizes the practical application of theory in organizations.

Students enrolled in courses in the Rochester program meet every other weekend (Fridays 3:00 to 9:00 pm / Saturdays 8:00 am to 12:30 pm). A three-credit course is completed in four weekend sessions, or eight weeks. Courses are offered consecutively in progression throughout fall, spring, and summer semesters. Coursework can be completed as quickly as two years, or matriculated in up to seven years.

The Duluth M.B.A. program graduated its first six students in 1978. As of May 2001, the program had a total of approximately 275 graduates. Rochester has graduated approximately 70 students since 2002.

Student Satisfaction
The M.B.A. uses a systematic process to assess its graduates' level of satisfaction with the program and uses alumni feedback to continuously improve program quality. Some of the findings from recent surveys indicate that:

  • Graduates report being strongly satisfied with the advisement, guidance, and quality of instruction received from M.B.A. faculty members.
  • 86% of graduates feel the M.B.A. program had a favorable impact on their careers.
  • 98% of graduates feel they gained personal benefit from their M.B.A. program experience.
  • All graduates indicated being "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the UMD M.B.A. program.
