January 18, 2008 - BICB Research Symposium

Date: January 18, 2008
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Place: University of Minnesota Rochester, Rochester, MN

A research symposium in biomedical informatics and computational biology was held on January 18, 2008 to facilitate collaborations in the areas of:

  1. Data mining methods for clinical and laboratory data, and
  2. Computational methods for rational drug design.

This symposium brought together teams of scientists and administrators from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMTC), University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR), Hormel Institute, Mayo Clinic, and IBM. The symposium was held in Rochester at UMR and the first part of the symposium was open to the broader scientific community.  The symposium also provided an opportunity for the current BICB graduate trainees and their advisors to interact with the seed grant awardees to discuss potential future collaborations. This was intended to further strengthen and solidify the research connections between the participating institutions.  The BICB Research Symposium was widely announced to attract researchers outside of the participant group, to identify additional collaborators, and to publicize the BICB efforts at UMR.  In particular, BICB graduate trainees and their advisors were invited to participate.  More than 80 researchers from the collaborating institutions attended the symposium.

Symposium Details
The symposium had two parts:  The first part of the symposium was open to a larger group to publicize the activities in Rochester with the aim to broaden the research base. It featured speakers from each of the five BICB Seed Grant Teams who gave research talks followed by discussion on the work that is funded by the UMR Seed Grant Program.

The second part of the symposium was only open to the symposium organizers, the participating Seed Grant Team members, and guests of the Seed Grant Teams. During this second part, the teams discussed their research and work towards the establishment of a common vision that will be developed into research proposals for extramural funding during the ensuing months.

August 27, 2007 - BICB Trainee Orientation Session

Date: August 27, 2007
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Place: Radisson Plaza Hotel, Rochester, MN

A key ingredient of the BICB traineeship program is for the trainees to share their experiences with each other (i.e., cohort program) and to help the University of Minnesota develop academic and research programs in biomedical informatics and computational biology.  This event brought together BICB Traineeship students along with their UM advisor and co-advisor from either IBM or Mayo Clinic.

At this session, each group (trainee and their advisors) prepared a 5-10 minute presentation on the joint research/training project they were planning so that students and their advisors would get better acquainted. Also discussed were the details of the training program and information was provided about the plans to establish a BICB graduate program at the University of Minnesota. A listing of the 2007-08 trainees is available at 2007-08 Traineeships.

As part of the Orientation Session’s activities the attendees were provided an overview and brief tour of the new downtown campus of the University of Minnesota Rochester.  The Orientation Session was well attended by trainees and co-advisors and all ten trainee projects were presented and discussed.

May 21, 2007 - BICB Symposium

Date: May 21, 2007
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Place: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Building on the success of the first BICB Symposium, this event again brought together faculty and researchers from IBM, Mayo Clinic, Hormel Institute, and UM Twin Cities to meet and share scientific interests that could lead to collaborative research projects.

The primary purpose of the event was to provide an informal setting where researchers and faculty from the collaborating institutions could meet, communicate interests, exchange ideas, and plant the seeds for future collaboration.  There was a reception and a short program followed by group and individual discussion opportunities.  Adequate time was provided to facilitate productive discussions on potential research collaborations.  As was announced at the first BICB Symposium on March 8, internal funding was available on a competitive basis to support collaborative interdisciplinary BICB research projects.  Awards up to $100,000 per year for up to two years were expected.  Nearly 50 researchers from the collaborating institutions attended the Symposium. A listing of the projects funded is available at 2007-08 Research Projects.
