Director of Admissions

The Director of Admissions is responsible for all strategic student recruitment planning, outreach activity, and office management .  The Director will also work collaboratively to develop and implement an image and identity plan to realize institutional visibility goals that address issues of positioning, organizational branding, and strategic communication. The position will provide leadership for the admissions team, maintain and improve office systems; address technology needs; establish departmental goals and institutional objectives for quality/customer service; and develop and implement, in collaboration with faculty, administration and staff, comprehensive recruitment strategies and activities to achieve the University’s student enrollment and multicultural goals. The primary objective for the Office of Admissions is to meet enrollment targets through recruitment of all student populations, including new freshman, transfer and adult students, and the processing of admissions applications for undergraduate students to ensure a highly qualified and diverse student body.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the leadership and management of the UMR Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive admissions plan that effectively communicates and leverages UMR’s mission and distinctive qualities
  • Recruit and facilitate enrollment of prospective undergraduate students.
  • Provide admissions counseling to prospective students.
  • Evaluate academic and other credentials for admission decision and counseling purposes.
  • Plan, implement, and participate in general and multicultural student recruitment outreach activities on and off campus.
  • Responsible for all data systems in the Admissions office—including recruitment and admission data reporting, providing data to other departments for recruitment, and preparing statistical reports to assist admission activities, recruitment/enrollment forecasting, and assessment of demographic market forces
  • Work with marketing, financial aid, records, graduate and other departments to ensure the effective administration of the admissions websites, on-line application, database systems, and statistical and survey tools.  Update all web-based and downloadable forms.
  • Recruitment activities and travel may be included.

Skills Needed

  • Leadership, vision, data analysis, and strategic decision making to assist in meeting institutional enrollment goals
  • Knowledge of current admissions and enrollment management issues, and a thorough understanding of the strategic uses of information technology, direct mail marketing, web-based marketing, publications, and telemarketing in an effective recruitment/admission strategy
  • Outstanding communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Computer skills, including word processing and database usage

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Four years experience in admissions and/or recruiting
  • Knowledge and demonstrated successful use of admissions strategies and processes including market research, direct mail, telemarketing, recruitment publications, e-recruitment, and financial aid leveraging
  • Exceptional leadership, supervision, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Exemplary customer service and relationship-building skills, strong interpersonal skills, evidence of the ability to establish rapport easily with a wide variety of people and to project a positive image
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, oral communication and presentations
  • Outstanding and proven ability to organize and follow through on projects
  • Demonstrated capacity for collaboration across departmental lines to create a team-oriented environment with faculty, staff and students
  • Competency in data analysis and the use of spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel (requires occasional overnight, evening and weekend work)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned master’s degree
  • Experience in personnel supervision and budget management
  • Knowledge of print, mass media and internet purchasing and placement
  • Experience in using computerized data bases, the Internet and web-based enrollment strategies
  • Five years progressively responsible experience in college admissions and/or enrollment management

Currently UMR offers doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate programs, in addition to several certificate and licensure programs. Director of Communications & Public Relations

The Director of Communications and Public Relations is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the University of Minnesota Rochester’s overall communications and marketing strategic plan. These duties include all public relations activities, both external and internal.  The Director is also responsible for the overall brand management, effectiveness, and brand strength through earned and paid mediums.  This position works closely with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Director of Admissions and other administrative personnel in academic and support areas.  The Director’s efforts support the University’s teaching, research, and service missions.  This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement.  Additionally, the Director will work as needed and designated by the administration on educational, governmental, and partnership efforts to promote the University and its initiatives.

Position Responsibilities (not all inclusive)

  • Creates, implements and measures the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance the University’s image and position within the marketplace, with the general public, and facilitate internal and external communications.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with all other areas where marketing efforts are occurring. 
  • Acts as the University’s representative with marketing and communications directors in other system-wide University units.
  • Stimulates and coordinates media interest in the University and ensures regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.  Writes and distributes news releases and media advisories.
  • Provides editorial direction and supervises the design, production and distribution of all University publications.  Coordinates the appearance of all University print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, etc.
  • Identifies, develops and implements new activities that increase communication effectiveness and improve the dissemination of key information to faculty, administrators and other internal system constituents.
  • Supports the development and implementation of potential academic programs through market research, marketing studies, and new program marketing.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement to initiate special events.
  • Selects, supervises and administers firms to support University functions in marketing, public relations, or other activities necessary to support the department’s charge.   
  • Oversees the University’s electronic marketing efforts including supervision of web site design,  maintenance  and exploration of web 2.0 marketing opportunities.
  • Supervises the University editor and webmaster and shares supervisory responsibility for the events coordinator. 
  • Develops, maintains and implements a crisis communications plan.
  • Ensures that evaluation systems are in place to adequately monitor departmental goals and objectives and reports progress to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement on a recurring basis.

Required Qualifications
Candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in a related field (marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or similar fields) and at least five years experience in strategic communications management, public relations or in marketing management. 

Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience writing press releases, making presentations and managing media and contracted organizations.  The successful candidate will be a self-starter, highly organized, and able to work well with staff at all levels in the organization.  This position requires proficiency of Microsoft Office and Windows-based computer applications as well as the ability to make polished presentations and a high degree of interpersonal skills.  The candidate must also have proven experience in managing budgets.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates will have a master’s degree in a related field (marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or similar fields) and experience working with public relations, communications or marketing firms.  Candidates will have experience in higher education, experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications, and demonstrated ability to identify and retain consultants, manage consultant engagements and achieve productive results.

Director of Human Resources

The Director of Human Resources at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) develops and administers a comprehensive range of human resources programs and services.  The HR Director combines internal organizational development along with the human resources generalist role to provide effective staffing and professional services to UMR.  The HR Director consults with UMR administration on development of staffing plans, recruitment, classification and compensation, labor/employee relations, grievance management, performance management and the work environment.  The HR Director will identify and implement innovative approaches to maximize employee capacity and performance,  She/he will be an active member of the UMR team of administrative staff to advance UMR, its current and future programs, and the Center for Learning Innovation.  The HR Director is also the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Officer, the Designated Employee Benefit Contact Person (DEBCP), and the Sexual Harassment Officer.

Position Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor supervisory/managerial staff on issues concerning staffing, employee relations, labor relations, performance evaluation, and compensation.
  • Coordinate and implement human resource programs and materials designed to meet organizational, management and staff development needs. 
  • Provide assistance to administration in the selection of position titles and the development of position descriptions, qualifications, selection criteria and appropriate salary levels.
  • Advise search committees, provides EOAA search committee training and may pre-screen candidates.
  • Provide basic information on employee benefits programs and policies. 
  • Administer workplace and University policies and procedures.
  • Provide expertise and direction to answer questions and resolve problems for management and employees.
  • Assist in the development of short- and long-term workforce and staffing plans.
  • Provide advice and training in all aspects of performance management and implement merit-based performance programs where appropriate.
  • Assist in annual budget development and the strategic planning process.
  • Partner with the University Office of Human Resources and the Office of the General Counsel regarding employee/labor issues, legal issues and arbitrations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ experience in the administration of major human resources functions in a large complex organization
  • Skill in interpreting and analyzing application of policies, rules and contracts
  • Oral and written communication skills to include customer service, presentation and facilitation
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work on a team
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in human resource management, human resource development, industrial relations or equivalent

Associate Program Director for Health Sciences

Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will assume day-to-day responsibilities for programs in health sciences at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) and those delivered in Rochester through the Center for Allied Health Programs (CAHP).  He/she will manage ongoing operations and assist in planning for future growth in a fast-paced work environment where innovation is valued.  This person will facilitate the  integration of academic health science programs, faculty and staff and nurture relationships with program partners while remaining responsive to opportunities to incorporate additional public and private partners who may provide additional programmatic and educational opportunities for students.

Many of the position responsibilities will flow from direct student contact.  The Associate Program Director (APD) will meet with potential students to discuss details of the benefits of UMR and CAHP academic programs, career advancement and the enrollment and matriculation process.  He/she will be required to manage and troubleshoot issues for transfer students and those from partner institutions.  The APD will also manage recurring information sessions, provide information to those who inquire on a drop-in basis, present education related topics to groups as requested and coordinate recruiting activities with admissions staff to ensure a consistent message is presented.  Recruiting responsibilities may include creating and distributing marketing materials, promoting degrees to industry partners, monitoring potential student interest and application status, and coordinating travel and potential student interaction with UMR student services staff.

The APD will also meet regularly with continuing students and coordinate student meetings with staff and faculty from specific disciplines.  Interactions will include on-site student advising, event planning or coordination, assisting in completion of student paperwork, compiling and presenting student concerns, and tracking student progress towards degree.  Many of these efforts will be coordinated with student services and other program staff and faculty.

While ensuring the program and student quality remain high, the APD will explore collaborative partnerships for the delivery of academic program initiatives with other collegiate units within the University of Minnesota system, MnSCU institutions, local secondary schools, and public or private sector organizations.  The APD will work with academic staff and faculty from other units to plan and coordinate timely delivery of courses in a manner that allows students to progress through graduation, which will include assisting with faculty recruitment efforts.  The APD may also suggest and help plan elective course offerings and non-credit professional education opportunities as well as teach occasionally as appropriate.  They will collaborate with the community and private industry with support from other program directors to evaluate the need for, and potentially expand, the number of academic degree, certificate, and other professional development programs.

The APD will provide administrative support for CAHP partnership activities at UMR as requested by the CAHP director.  He/she will be a liaison for the CAHP in the following areas:  1) articulation agreements with partner institutions; 2) planned future partners in southern Minnesota; 3) facilitating statewide clinical rotation systems for Rochester-based CAHP students, and 4) other health related initiatives in southern Minnesota.  She/He will coordinate support for CAHP faculty including purchasing and budgeting, meeting planning and organization, coordinating online conferencing with UMTC, assisting with grant preparation related to UMR based programs, and coordinating course evaluations.  In addition The APD will organize faculty development activities planned by the CAHP director leading to greater comfort with e-learning

This person will be expected to anticipate forthcoming program needs and to be certain those needs are met.  The APD will anticipate and manage work load changes due to the cyclical nature of academic year work flow and represent UMR at community events and support outreach efforts.  Regular meetings and travel are necessary to successfully complete many of the position requirements.

Required Qualifications
Candidates must have an graduate degree plus four years experience in administrative project coordination; exceptional organizational skills; the ability to communicate clearly with individuals and groups; excellent writing, speaking, and presentation skills; the ability to successfully administer or manage projects from initiation to completion; a record of developing lasting relationships with diverse partners; the ability to plan, organize and manage multiple programs simultaneously; and show evidence of developing successful collaborations across institutional and disciplinary areas of interest.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications included a graduate degree in health sciences or closely related field; experience working in healthcare delivery; a background in academic health sciences; experience working or teaching at a research university; experience directing operations of an academic program; progressively increasing administrative responsibility; experience working directly with students to ensure successful degree completion; a record of successful individual and group project management; and experience in teaching, advising students, curriculum and program development, and program evaluation in higher education settings.

The Center for Allied Health Programs was created by the Regents in July 2006 as a program of the Academic Health Center to address workforce shortages in key areas through the development of signature hybrid (online and face-to-face) educational programs at multiple locations or performance sites around Minnesota. The CAHP currently operates programs in Clinical Laboratory Science and Occupational Therapy in the Twin Cities and Rochester.  A key part of the Center’s strategy involves partnerships with higher education and industry throughout the state.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. This exciting opportunity requires an academic leader who is comfortable with charting new ground in both the academic and operational areas of the University. Creativity and innovation will be key abilities for functioning successfully in this position.

The University
The University of Minnesota extended its commitment to Rochester by designating UMR its fifth coordinate campus in December 2006. The University recently received funding to expand into new space located at University Square in downtown Rochester. The campus currently serves approximately 400 students taking courses through partnerships with other campuses of the University of Minnesota.

UMR will admit its first freshmen class in fall 2009 and is projected to grow its enrollment to 1,400 by 2012. A master planning process is in development to assess the University’s future infrastructure needs to support student learning and research. The first Chancellor of the campus started in September 2007.

The Vice Chancellor
The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) is the campus chief academic officer, reporting directly to the Chancellor. The VCAA operates within the objectives and policies of the University of Minnesota as determined by the Board of Regents and the President of the University of Minnesota.

Faculty Position - Center for Learning Innovation (Life/Health Sciences)

The University of Minnesota Rochester invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in the life-health sciences (preferred areas are biochemistry, molecular biology, or cell biology) for its proposed degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS). This program will provide education and experiential learning for students interested in Health Professions career programs, graduate education, or professional degrees. Faculty will join the newly established Center for Learning Innovation (CLI) as Design Faculty.

CLI leads the development of an integrated curriculum for a baccalaureate degree in the health sciences. It promotes a learner-centered, competency-based learning environment in which ongoing assessment guides and monitors student learning and is the basis for data-driven research on learning. Design Faculty are responsible for the development of the curriculum, including learning objectives, development of learning objects, assessment, and mentoring of postdoctoral fellows. They are expected to significantly contribute to advancing the field of inquiry of student learning, especially as it pertains to understanding principles and concepts in the life, physical, and quantitative sciences and the humanities.

The successful candidate has a Ph.D. in the life/health sciences with a deep interest in science-based learning and has experience in the design of new curricula, assessment, and technology-enhanced education at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate works well in interdisciplinary teams, is comfortable working in an uncertain and unstructured environment, and exhibits creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Faculty Position - Center for Learning Innovation (Physical Sciences)

The University of Minnesota Rochester invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in the physical sciences (preferred area is chemistry) for its proposed degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS). This program will provide education and experiential learning for students interested in Health Professions career programs, graduate education, or professional degrees. Faculty will join the newly established Center for Learning Innovation (CLI) as Design Faculty.

CLI leads the development of an integrated curriculum for a baccalaureate degree in the health sciences. It promotes a learner-centered, competency-based learning environment in which ongoing assessment guides and monitors student learning and is the basis for data-driven research on learning.

Design Faculty are responsible for the development of the curriculum, including learning objectives, development of learning objects, assessment, and mentoring of postdoctoral fellows. They are expected to significantly contribute to advancing the field of inquiry of student learning, especially as it pertains to understanding principles and concepts in the life, physical, and quantitative sciences and the humanities.

The successful candidate has a Ph.D. in the physical sciences with a deep interest in science-based learning and has experience in the design of new curricula, assessment, and technology-enhanced education at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate works well in interdisciplinary teams, is comfortable working in an uncertain and unstructured environment, and exhibits creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The University of Minnesota designated the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) as its fifth coordinate campus in December 2006. The campus currently serves approximately 400 students taking courses through partnerships with other campuses of the University of Minnesota. UMR will admit its first freshmen class in fall 2009 and is projected to grow its enrollment to 1,400 by 2012.
