Graphic Design Major
Graphic design is one of society’s newest art forms. It is by turns fine and commercial art, communications, information, architecture, environments, interaction, sound, and motion. It is print and screen-based, real and virtual, 2-, 3-, and 4-dimensional. Graphic design involves type and language, abstract and figurative imagery, concept, technology and craft.
The art of graphic design involves the manipulation of type and image for personal and public communication. This activity is performed in both print and electronic media, within commercial, artistic, and academic contexts. Design acts as a medium for cultural investigation and visual expression. The discipline takes place within commercial, academic, and institutional contexts in the private and public realms and allows individuals to enter a rewarding profession that demands creativity and vision.

Coursework
All students begin their experience with liberal education and art courses that expand their understanding of visual forms and the creative process. Work in these courses will foster students’ artistic and visual communication skills. Theoretical, historical, and conceptual foundations are provided through offerings in art history and seminars. Students complete their experience by installing, promoting and presenting an exhibition of their own work to the public during their final year.
Students studying at other institutions are encouraged to contact a UMR advisor as soon as possible to help ensure the transferability of their coursework.
