Fine Arts

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Department of Art and Design, School of Fine Arts offers two baccalaureate degrees in Rochester.

The information below is common to both the Graphic Design and the Studio Arts programs.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Program Description

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) is a selective art program providing in-depth instruction in the visual arts through a high concentration of coursework in the Department of Art and Design.  Students interested in artistic or scholarly development or those planning a career in arts administration, teaching, or graphic design may have an interest in the B.F.A.

B.F.A. degree programs are for students pursuing programs of intensive study to prepare for professional practice in the arts and will provide the background and skills necessary to work with a variety of people and projects in digital arts and more traditional mediums.

Delivery Format

All courses leading to the completion of the degree are delivered at the University of Minnesota Rochester campus. Courses in the major are provided by the University of Minnesota Duluth School of Fine Arts. Enrollment is limited based on space and resource availability.

Admission Information

Application Process

  • Degree Seeking Student
    • Speak with University of Minnesota Rochester advisor Nathan Tesch at 507-280-5017 or e-mail tesch026@umn.edu.
    • Complete a UMD application for either freshmen or transfer admission. This form is available at http://www.d.umn.edu/admissions/online.html.
    • Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.  [UMD’s school code is 002388.]
    • UMD will send you a letter notifying you of your application results.  If you are accepted into a program, detailed information regarding any transferred credit will accompany your acceptance letter.
    • Attend UMD orientation (in Rochester) and enroll in selected courses.
  • Non-Degree Seeking Student

Application Deadline
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The priority application deadline for fall is February 1; however, applications will be considered on a space-available basis until August 1.  The spring application deadline is November 15.

PLEASE NOTE: It is important that you specify on your application your plan to take classes in Rochester.  This may be done in section 27 “Other special talents, honors or awards”.

Entrance Requirements
Students who have attempted fewer than 26 college credits will be admitted if they have:

  • a high school rank at or above the 50th percentile
  • a GPA of at least 1.80 in their previous college work, and
  • successfully completed at least 75 percent of all college work attempted

Students who have attempted 26 or more college credits will apply for advanced standing and be evaluated on the School of Fine Arts (SFA) transfer requirements:

  • 31 or more semester hours attempted must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • less than 31 credit hours attempted must have a cumulative GPA of 1.80

Course Transfer

Students considering transferring courses into either B.F.A. program may utilize the Minnesota Course Applicability System (MnCAS) https://mn.transfer.org/cas/index.jsp to unofficially determine how their previous coursework may transfer. Only the UMD Admissions office can complete an official transfer evaluation upon receiving an application.

Graduate School Preparation

The B.F.A. degree prepares students for graduate study in the area of art.  UMD offers a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree with an emphasis in graphic design.  The M.F.A. is considered a terminal degree in art fields. More information can be found at http://www.d.umn.edu/art/program/mfa.html.

Financial Aid

One application, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), is used to apply for federal, state, and university aid. Students may obtain the FAFSA filing materials online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The FAFSA form should be filed as soon as possible after the previous year’s tax returns are completed. Students must indicate on the FAFSA all aid programs for which they wish to be considered.  [UMD’s school code is 002388.]

All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to determine their eligibility for state and federal grants and loans.  Scholarships may also be available through the School of Fine Arts and the University of Minnesota Rochester.

Technology Requirements

All students enrolling Fall 2007 or later are required to provide their own laptop and software for fine arts courses.  Costs associated with the laptop and software purchases may be included as part of a student’s financial aid package.
