Certificate
Programs
The University-level certificate program is designed for enrolled
University of Minnesota degree-seeking students and non-degree seeking
students including professionals who are seeking continuing education
in their fields. A certificate provides additional recognition of
professional expertise and is a reflection of a commitment to lifelong
learning. A certificate can also offer a shorter course of study
than a degree, making it a viable option for both non-degree seeking
students and students who have completed an advanced degree in a
related field.
University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) offers two types of certificate
programs: post-baccalaureate and professional.

Certificate Programs:
- Post-Baccalaureate
Post-baccalaureate certificate programs are increasingly
being sought by a variety of professionals who wish to enhance
their knowledge, skills, and professional credibility without
having to devote two or more years to full-degree graduate programs.
The Graduate School offers post-baccalaureate certificates that
recognize graduate-level training beyond the award of the bachelor’s
degree. Certificates may be coupled with a master’s or doctoral
degree under special circumstances and with the approval of the
graduate faculty in the degree-granting field. Post-baccalaureate
certificates offered through the Graduate School require a minimum
of 12 credits.
- Professional
Professional certificates can serve as stepping stones to a degree;
with program faculty approval, credits completed in a certificate
program may be transferred into a degree program. Many students
who pursue a baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree add to
their credentials by pursuing a professional certificate. When
successfully completed, certificates are listed on a student's
transcript, serving as an additional credential to advance a student's'
education and career.
