Continuing Education & Professional Development

Continuing education and professional development programming at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is focused on accelerating the knowledge and skills of professionals in a variety of fields. Programming is enhanced by extending University of Minnesota system resources to Southeastern Minnesota.

The majority of programs offered are designed to cover the topic and material for a specific audience. Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) staff can work with businesses and organizations to design programs to meet special needs. Working through the College of Continuing Education, UMR can also award CEU credits.

Over the past 24 months, UMR CEPD has served more than 2,000 people and presented more than 60 programs in the areas of: business, technology, politics, medicine, law, human resources, veterinary medicine, human ecology, pharmacy, transportation, journalism, environment, and alternative energy sources.

    Why Don't Patients Take Their Drugs as Prescribed? Practical Barriers to Medication Adherence Among Real People"

    Most patients do not take Rx medications exactly as prescribed. The scientific evidence is clear -- nonadherence is more common than complete adherence in most populations. This session will include case studies and hands-on experiences to illustrate common barriers to adherence and practical solutions for the front line.

    The Real World of Internet Predators, Perverts and Their Prey

    While the Internet offers a world of educational and entertainment options for young people, it also has a dark and dangerous side we must be aware of. This presentation on the online exploitation of children includes real-life examples and practical advice for anyone interested in the safety and well-being of our children.

Real Colors®: The Key to Unlocking the Mystery of Human Behavior

If you had a key that would unlock the answers to human behavior, would you use it?  Imagine having the knowledge to truly understand yourself and others, without requiring years of study.

The Real Colors® Personality Instrument is a simple, easy to administer system for identifying the four temperaments (Blue, Gold, Green or Orange).  It provides users with an effective tool for understanding human behavior, for uncovering motivators specific to each temperament, and for improving communication skills.  This session will be presented in a fast, fun, interactive format and participants will learn the key to achieving higher levels of success, both personally and professionally.

Presenter
Katy Smith, of Smith Consulting, received her B.S.W. and teaching license in Parent Education from Winona State University in Minnesota.  She earned her M.E. in Professional Development from the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse and is a certified Real Colors® System trainer.

Computer Programming Workshops for Grades 9-12 (or instructor approval)

Have fun learning Visual Basic, one of the most commonly used programming languages or C++ Game Programming, where you will learn to create your own video games!

For the eighth year, University of Minnesota Rochester and IBM will sponsor two five-day computer programming workshops for high school students entering grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 this coming fall. The workshops are designed for teens interested in exploring career options or for those who just want to have fun learning! Both workshops will consist of a week-long summer program at the University of Minnesota Rochester and include a tour of IBM and in-class assistance from IBM volunteers.

Introduction to Visual Basic
Want to learn computer programming in a fun summer workshop?  Then Introduction to Visual Basic is the place to be! Learn the basics of Visual Basic 6.0, Microsoft's premier programming language, used by more than three million developers and in 50 million Windows applications.  Students will develop "real world" applications, beginning with very simple programs and moving on to more sophisticated applications, including a phone order form for Luigi's Pizzeria.  This workshop is aimed at students who have little or no experience in computer programming.

About the Instructor
Cheryl Davis teaches business and computer programming at Winona Senior High School in Winona, Minnesota. Her business classes include introductory courses in business and marketing, as well as courses in record keeping and keyboarding. Her computer courses at Winona include a three-term series in Visual Basic, a two-term series in Visual C++, and two web page design courses.

Education:

  • Ph.D. program coursework in Finance, Accounting, and Operations Research, University of Texas at Austin
  • Ph.D. program in Finance, Georgia State University
  • B.A., English, Stanford University

Experience:

After graduating from Stanford University, Ms. Davis was accepted into a special Ford Foundation funded project at Stanford. This project pioneered the concept of data base technology and also afforded Ms. Davis the opportunity to perfect her computer programming skills, delve into state-of-the-art computer technology, and present her findings at many national computing technology conferences.

Later in her career, Ms. Davis pioneered additional data base and telecommunications technologies at other companies, including Intel Corporation and The Wollongong Group. The executive positions she held in a wide variety of business areas including software engineering, marketing and operations, allowed Ms. Davis to gain extensive experience and rich insights into the functioning of business. She also was fortunate enough to be in the right places at the right times to witness first-hand the birth and rapid growth of some of the most revolutionary computer technologies the world has ever seen: data base, personal computers, the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Beginning C++ Game Programming
If you’re ready to jump into the world of programming for games, this workshop will get you started on your journey, providing you with a solid foundation in the game programming language of the professionals.  Aimed at those who have taken Introduction to Visual Basic (or have instructor approval) and want to take their programming skills to the next level.  Faster paced course than Introduction to Visual Basic.

About the Instructor
Kari grew up in Trempealeau, WI and attended WSU majoring in Math Education and Statistics and earning a minor in Computer Science. Kari will be starting year 13 of teaching for the Rochester Public Schools this fall. She enjoys her job teaching math and computer programming at Century High School. She also teaches for the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program, UMTYMP in addition to the summer program College For Kids through RCTC.  Recently, Kari began teaching math and computer classes for Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development.

Educator of the Year
University of Minnesota Rochester instructor Kari Stellpflug was named Educator of the Year in 2005 by the Rochester Area Math Science Partnership. This unique partnership includes 12 school districts, three higher education institutions, IBM Corp., and Mayo Clinic.

Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) Preparatory Course

Learn test-taking strategies geared toward the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the GMAT. Discuss proven methods for dealing with each of the question types and work with test-simulation exercises. This course is well suited to students who seek a structured learning environment. Students will be given a pre-assessment GMAT test to take and return for instructor evaluation, prior to the first class.
