Certificate Program in Applied Business Functions

This certificate program is organized to provide students with a foundation in the basic functions of business. The topics covered are valuable to everyone working in business as an employee, a manager, an entrepreneur, or an owner.

Delivery Format

The core business courses in this certificate are all delivered online. Courses are offered at least once every 12 months. They are organized in 14-week blocks and delivered in an asynchronous format. Courses usually start in January, May, and September.

Scope of Coursework

The program consists of a total of 18 upper division credits. A total of 15 credits must come from specified core areas of business and 3 credits from business related electives. A maximum of 40 percent of credits can be transferred into the certificate program following an
academic advisor review.

Certificate Completion and Award

The certificate is awarded by the University of Minnesota, College of Continuing Education (CCE), Twin Cities Campus. The certificate can be completed in as little as 12 months.

Program Admission Information

Forty-five (45) semester credits of completed coursework with a desired cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better is required for admission to this program. Prerequisites include undergraduate coursework in Microeconomics and Financial Accounting. Admission into the certificate program is not required to register for the first class. During or upon completion of the first class, students should apply for admission to the certificate program. Students are admitted to the certificate program three times a year in May, August, and December.

Certificate as Preparation for M.B.A. Program

The courses in this certificate also serve as some of the necessary foundation courses for admission to University of Minnesota, Duluth Labovitz School of Business and Economics M.B.A. program offered at UMR. Admissions requirements for the M.B.A. program are different than those for the certificate.
