Program
Description
Students with two-year computer science-related degrees can continue
their education by completing the University of Minnesota’s
Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program with a major in Information
Technology Infrastructure (ITI). Not only will they earn valued
University of Minnesota credentials, but will also combine their
experience with education needed for advancement into management-level
positions.
This degree is designed to give students a hands-on approach in
the classroom, focusing not only on theory, but also its applied
use in the workplace. More of the required courses are related to
specific skills and fewer general liberal education credits are
needed to meet the 120 credit degree requirements.

Degree
Requirements
The BAS-ITI degree is offered through the College of Continuing
Education. The degree is an advanced standing programs and, therefore,
most lower-division requirements should be completed or near completion
before applying for official admission to the program. However,
students do not have to be admitted to the BAS degree program in
order to enroll in a BAS course; they can choose courses that interest
them, build skills in a particular area, and learn more about the
programs before applying for admission.
There are three areas of concentration within the major –
network administration, systems administration, and database administration.
Students may choose an educational path that meets their interests,
abilities, and career choices, preparing them to be able to design,
implement, and maintain the information technology infrastructure
that companies use to manage their business processes. Students
will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to write computer code
as well as adapt off-the-shelf software to meet business needs;
install and maintain networks, servers, and databases; and understand
the technical foundation regardless of specific software or hardware.

Delivery
Format
The BAS-ITI is a bachelor’s degree offered in partnership
with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). In Rochester,
BAS-ITI students benefit from courses provided by all three academic
institutions of the University Center Rochester. Rochester Community
and Technical College provides the lower division courses while
the U of M College of Continuing Education and Winona State University-Rochester provide the upper division courses. There are additional
classes that may need to be completed on the Twin Cities campus.
Lower division course work can also be completed through other MnSCU
institutions or through distance education.
The BAS-ITI degree and courses are designed for working adults.
The program provides students with several entry points and several
courses will be offered in multiple formats. Technology enhanced
learning will provide flexibility and variety and further improve
the education process.
