Program Description

Students working in the manufacturing industry can continue their education by completing the University of Minnesota Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program with a major in Manufacturing Technology (MT). Not only will they earn valued University of Minnesota credentials, but will also combine their experience with education needed for advancement into management-level positions.

This degree is designed to provide the background education employers look for in hiring and promotion. Therefore, this program is for students working in or planning to enter careers in manufacturing. Students learn new skills in the areas of manufacturing systems and processes, computer technology, quality, operations, project management, business and finance, and interpersonal skills including communications, leadership, teamwork, and diversity.

Degree Requirements

The BAS-MT degree is offered through the College of Continuing Education. The degree is an advanced standing program and therefore, most lower-division requirements should be completed or near completion before applying for official admission to the program. However, students do not have to be admitted to the BAS degree program in order to enroll in a BAS course; they can choose courses that interest them, build skills in a particular area, and learn more about the programs before applying for admission.

Specifically the lower-division course work introduces students to basic course work in math, physics, chemistry, economics, speech, composition, and skills specific to the manufacturing industry. Upper-division course work, offered by the University of Minnesota, expands and reinforces the knowledge and skills previously introduced and challenges students to apply their experience and learning to complex problems.

Delivery Format

The BAS-MT is a bachelor’s degree offered in partnership with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). In Rochester, BAS-MT students benefit from courses provided by all three academic institutions of the University Center Rochester: Rochester Community and Technical College provides the lower division courses while the U of M College of Continuing Education and Winona State University-Rochester provide the upper division courses. Lower division course work can also be completed through other MnSCU institutions or through distance education.

The BAS-MT degree and courses are designed for working adults. The program provides students with several entry points and several courses will be offered in multiple formats. Technology enhanced learning will provide flexibility and variety and further improve the education process.
