Giving Opportunities

Gifts can be designated by the donor for many purposes. UMR, working with community leaders and colleagues, has identified two areas of importance in creating a vibrant university:

  1. Scholarships to attract the best students and assist those with financial needs
  2. Strategic investment funds to launch new programs and respond quickly to emerging teaching, research, and outreach needs

Scholarships
Education is the cornerstone for economic and cultural advancement of thriving communities. Highly skilled and educated workers must be drawn from Southeastern Minnesota as well as attracting workers from areas outside the region. With rising costs for higher education and cost of living, many highly motivated and talented people simply cannot pursue higher education due to a lack of funds.

Scholarships provide an important bridge in helping students achieve personal goals of enhancing their skills and abilities through higher education. Upon completion of their degrees, graduates are readily able to enter the workforce and provide exceptional levels of service to enhance the economic base of their communities and the region. Higher levels of education benefit the individual and the the economic health of communities.

Strategic Investment Funds
Southeastern Minnesota is growing quickly and the need for educational, cultural, and research opportunities must keep pace with the advancement in population and business expectations. Locally controlled strategic investment funds provide the flexibility to rapidly respond to community needs.

  • Supporting research start-up projects in health sciences, technology, business, and education
  • Organizing new academic degree programs to meet the unique needs of regional businesses, industries, and education
  • Developing innovative continuing professional education opportunities
  • Providing community activity "seed" funds

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I give to the University of Minnesota Rochester?
Gifts can serve students and the community by meeting educational needs of individuals or industries. Gifts also help prepare for the future through research and education.

How can I make a gift to UMR?
Gifts can be made in a number of ways including outright, planned, and corporate and foundation gifts. People or organizations interested in giving should contact the UMR Development Office.

Can my gift make a difference?
Although it might seem like a gift of $5 or $100 wouldn't have that much impact, every gift adds to the total pool of monies available to UMR. If ten donors give $100 each, a $1,000 award can be given to a deserving student

Why does UMR need private funds when it receives public dollars from the State?
Despite UMR's designation as state supported, it continues to receive less and less of its operating monies from the State of Minnesota. At this point, Minnesota's contribution is less than 30% of the University's total budget. It is expected that state contributions will continue to decline.

Can I designate the use of my gift?
Absolutely. It's your money. You may also name a scholarship or project for yourself or a loved one with the establishment of an endowed fund. Unrestricted funds can make the difference in allowing the University to decide where the funds can make the biggest impact.

Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes, as permissible by law. Consult your accountant.
