About Dave Mona
Ever since he was a young boy growing up in Minneapolis, Dave Mona has been fascinated with sports and an avid follower of the local sports scene.  What began simply with an extensive baseball card collection has grown to firsthand encounters with many legends from the worlds of baseball, football, basketball, boxing, and more.

Although Mona's brief high school basketball career saw glimpses of greatness, his immersion in the Twin Cities sports world took off when he became sports editor for the Minnesota Daily, the student newspaper at the University of Minnesota. There he covered the great Gopher football teams coached by Murray Warmath, who took Mona to task for revealing in the paper the team's strategies and game plans.  Mona also shares here his brief brush with Garrison Keillor, who had the adjoining office as editor of the campus literary magazine, The Ivory Tower.

From the student newspaper, Mona made his way to the sports desk at The Minneapolis Tribune, where he became the baseball beat writer. His pieces on Nicollet Park and Willie Mays take the reader back to the glory days of the Minneapolis Millers, and his encounters with Harmon Killebrew, Billie Martin, and Calvin Griffith offer insight into Minnesota's exciting new baseball franchise, the Twins, in the 1960s.

Since joining Sid Hartman on the Sports Huddle and the Gopher football broadcast team, Mona has become a veritable institution.  His often-amusing, always-entertaining tales of working with Sid take you behind the scenes at the WCCO studios.

More than just a media personality, Mona's experiences as owner of the Field of Dreams memorabilia stores and as a leading promoter for the Twin Cities have allowed him to brush elbows with everyone from  Muhammad Ali and John Wooden to Kirby Puckett and Johnny Bench.

These encounters and many more, recounted by Mona in an engaging and personal style, will give you a locker room pass to Minnesota sports history in Beyond the Sports Huddle.
