Doctoral Degrees

The University of Minnesota offers doctorate programs in Rochester through the Graduate School, the College of Education and Human Development, and the BICB Graduate Program.

Selecting a Ph.D. or an Ed.D.

Both programs are designed to educate students in their chosen degree path and prepare them for professional or academic work.

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. is designed for students committed to professional roles that emphasize conducting research.
  • Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
The Ed.D. is well suited for students who will provide leadership in the operation of educational institutions.

These doctoral degrees are administered through the Graduate School. Entry to the programs is competitive, as the Graduate School has high admissions standards. Students with specific career goals are encouraged to discuss the issue of selecting a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. with an advisor to determine the right choice for them.
