Launch Your Professional Life with UMR!

First-hand experience of professional careers in health care will help you make an educated decision when selecting a career path in the health sciences. The University of Minnesota Rochester is located one block away from the Mayo Clinic and 90 miles south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The campus setting makes it easy to experience a health sciences environment. You will have the opportunity to interact with health professionals, enroll in a health professions certificate program, or participate in cutting-edge research to gain a better understanding of what these respective professions involve. Student coaches and faculty will be here along the way to assist you on your educational path.

Health Sciences Careers are in Demand!

There is a significant shortage of health care professionals in the United States, including Minnesota. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that health care will be among the fastest growing sectors in the economy between 2009 and 2014. Also, according to iSEEK.org, over 25 of the top 50 growing careers in Minnesota are in the health sciences. The BSHS degree from UMR is a great way to get on track for professional careers that will be in demand for years to come!

Curriculum

The innovative and challenging curriculum of the BSHS degree will provide a strong background in health sciences, arts, and humanities. Integration across the natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, arts and humanities makes this program unique. Examples from diverse areas of the health sciences make the materials relevant. Authentic data, multiple sources of information, and engaging discussions among students and faculty transform complex concepts and bring them to life.

Today’s challenging professional environments demand skills beyond basic subject knowledge. Throughout the program there is emphasis on leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving and personal development that will offer you an opportunity to build a broad range of understanding for personal growth and professional development.

Faculty

The inaugural BSHS class starting in fall 2009 will be capped at 150 qualified students. With such a small class size, the BSHS faculty will get to know each student individually and work closely with students to deepen their knowledge and skills. Dedicated learning design faculty will engage students in projects relevant to careers in health sciences. The BSHS faculty is dedicated to student success, advancement of educational research, and the application of those insights in the classroom to help students succeed.

Capstone Experience

BSHS students will have the unique opportunity to personalize their education with a capstone experience relevant to their health sciences career interests. Opportunities may include pursuing a certificate program in a health profession, conducting a research project with faculty, enrolling in graduate school courses, or preparing for further professional school instruction.

Administration

The health sciences major is administered by the UMR Center for Learning Innovation.
