A key ingredient of the BICB traineeship program is for the trainees to share their experiences with each other (i.e., cohort program) and to help the University of Minnesota develop academic and research programs in biomedical informatics and computational biology. This event brought together BICB Traineeship students along with their UM advisor and co-advisor from either IBM or Mayo Clinic.
At this session, each group (trainee and their advisors) prepared a 5-10 minute presentation on the joint research/training project they were planning so that students and their advisors would get better acquainted. Also discussed were the details of the training program and information was provided about the plans to establish a BICB graduate program at the University of Minnesota.
As part of the Orientation Session’s activities the attendees were provided an overview and brief tour of the new downtown campus of the University of Minnesota Rochester. The Orientation Session was well attended by trainees and co-advisors and all ten trainee projects were presented and discussed.

Building on the success of the first BICB Symposium, this event again brought together faculty and researchers from IBM, Mayo Clinic, Hormel Institute, and UM Twin Cities to meet and share scientific interests that could lead to collaborative research projects.
The primary purpose of the event was to provide an informal setting where researchers and faculty from the collaborating institutions could meet, communicate interests, exchange ideas, and plant the seeds for future collaboration. There was a reception and a short program followed by group and individual discussion opportunities. Adequate time was provided to facilitate productive discussions on potential research collaborations. As was announced at the first BICB Symposium on March 8, internal funding was available on a competitive basis to support collaborative interdisciplinary BICB research projects. Awards up to $100,000 per year for up to two years were expected. Nearly 50 researchers from the collaborating institutions attended the Symposium. A listing of the projects funded is available at 2007-08 Research Projects.

The purpose of this inaugural event was to bring together faculty and
researchers from IBM, Mayo Clinic, Hormel Institute, and UM Twin Cities to meet and share scientific interests that could lead to collaborative research projects. Approximately 40 researchers from the collaborating institutions attended the symposium.
The event was planned by a committee representing these institutions. The committee suggested the focus of the event be on collaboration in the following broad areas of interest - medical imaging, integration of data types with genomic emphasis, computational biology, and computational approaches to genomics and proteomics.
The symposium was one of the first steps in establishing a University of Minnesota program in biomedical informatics and computational biology - a collaborative effort of IBM, Mayo Clinic, and University of Minnesota.
