Rebecca Bamford holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Durham University. Before coming to UMR, she was an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy at Rhodes University, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University, and she taught philosophy and interdisciplinary human studies at the universities of Durham, Bradford, and Hunter College of the City University of New York.
At UMR, I am responsible for the design and delivery of the humanities component of the BSHS core. Courses include: 'Introduction to the Arts and Humanities', 'Ethics', 'Bioethics', and 'History and Philosophy of Science'. Courses at previous institutions have included 'Foundations: Modern Philosophy', 'Philosophical Psychology', 'Nietzsche', 'Knowledge and Reality', 'Philosophical Ideas in Literature', 'Alienation and Reconciliation', 'Ethics', and 'Social Philosophy'.
My research explores questions arising at the intersections between modern European philosophy, contemporary philosophical psychology, aesthetics, and literature. I have published articles on ethics and on the history of modern European philosophy, and I served as Assistant Editor of the Journal of Nietzsche Studies between 2007 and 2009.
